Tel Hai Hosts Soren West on September 1: Hiking the Appalachian Trail at 75

Soren West & Theo

Tel Hai Retirement Community’s Life Enrichment Committee invites the public to attend an educational lecture titled “The Story of Sojourner: Hiking the Appalachian Trail at 75” on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 10:30 AM. Event is hosted in the StoneCroft Center for Worship & Performing Arts, on the campus at Tel Hai, located at 4000 Tree Line Drive, Honey Brook. This event is free and open to the public.

The lecture is provided by Soren West, a Lancaster-based attorney who hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (2,200 miles) with his trusty Golden Retriever Theo— at 75 years old! Fulfilling a dream from childhood, Soren will share his awesome story of navigating from Georgia to Maine, while battling injury, oppressive heat and the unforgiving wilderness.

Every Appalachian Trail “thru-hiker” takes a trail name. Soren’s is “Sojo” which stands for “Sojourner.” Travel with him on an adventure he conceived when he was 14 and finally achieved at 75.

Tel Hai is located only 3 short miles east of Route 10 off Beaver Dam Road. Follow Beaver Dam Road to the campus of Tel Hai, then turn onto Tree Line Drive and follow signs to StoneCroft. Parking is available adjacent to the StoneCroft commons main entrance.

Summer Youth Volunteer: My Time at Tel Hai

Summer Youth

This summer has been wonderful, because I got to make new friends and meet new people as a Summer Youth Volunteer. I can not wait to tell you about what I did this summer!

As a Summer Youth Volunteer I thought everybody at Tel Hai were nice and I felt like I was useful and appreciated. I enjoy helping people.

I worked in many areas of the building but these two are my favorite: Child Day Care and Health Care Center. At the Child Day Care, the kids make me laugh every time I am there.

When I do activities at the Health Care Center, the residents put a smile on my face every time I see them. When they say “Thank You,” I feel a little joy inside.

It was a fun experience. I will recommend volunteering to my friends and family. I will be doing this until I turn sixteen.
