TRAIN CLUB

Fellowship through a shared interest of model railroading

Community life at Tel Hai is a perfect mix of unique experiences and meaningful connections. And for members of the Train Club, nothing lives out this notion more than the hours spent in fun and fellowship creating and maintaining the Train Room.

With planning commencing in early 2018 upon the opening of Brownstone — the last constructed neighborhood within StoneCroft Apartments — years of volunteer work have resulted in an expansive miniature railroad community.

Featuring extensive displays of HO, S, G, N and O-gauge tracks, delightful miniature villages surround the tracks on several tablescapes within the 813 sq. ft. room. With the majority of trains, tracks, and scenes donated from residents and friends of the community, the cohesiveness of the room is quite impressive.

Highlights include:

– A fishing village with a boat repair shop

– Reading anthracite coal depot and oil refinery

– Antique car show, towns and storefronts of decades past

– Mountains, log cabin and river scenes with campers

– Amish farm with cattle and gardening scenes

The Making of a Mural

So what do you get when you combine a passionate Train Club and a joyful, on-campus professional artist? A brilliantly colorful, 30-ft. custom wall mural that adds the local Chester County landscape to a train room tablescape!

“I visited other train clubs, and others had background walls with painted scenery,” commented Bob Stevens, a member of the Train Club. “I contacted Loretta Gable Englerth — and with her talents and involvement in our on-campus Arts Suite — and shared our vision for a partnership.”

“After Bob and I talked, the excitement of a mural came alive. I began to sketch the rolling hills, farmland, rooftops developed into a more realistic view and fields scattered with animals found around Tel Hai,” shared Loretta. “Working with the Train Club has been a fantastic experience, and they are absolutely wonderful to work with.”

After months of sketching with graphite, transferring, applying in permanent marker and topping with acrylic paints, Loretta’s mural has taken more than 485 hours to complete. “One of my life challenges was to paint a mural,” Loretta said. “And working in the train room made me think of my father — Wilbert Gable — and the time I spent with him painting his train display.”

“This mural is a result of collaboration. New friendships between two groups coming together to support each other,” shared Loretta, who has taught watercolor classes at Tel Hai even prior to moving to the community in 2016. Bob echoed, “Her work enhances our train room, and our clubs are now friends!”

Visit the Train Room

The Train Room is open for residents from 1-3 PM every Thursday, except the third Thursday of the month. Train Room is located in StoneCroft, 4000 Tree Line Drive, Honey Brook.

Top Tips for Home Staging

It is possible to achieve the unimaginable. For some, even the thought of preparing to move is exhausting. You can do it, and we can help!

Your ultimate goal is to secure a buyer for your home, right? In today’s crowded real estate market, ‘home staging’ is another DIY tool in your home sales toolbox. You may have already heard of ‘home staging,’ but don’t know what it actually is. In essence, ‘home staging’ is preparing your home for sale.

Staging can be a useful tool to help sell your home quickly, but it does take forethought and planning. Staging your home today means more than making the bed and having a clean kitchen sink. It’s purposeful preparation.

Remember, you have one chance for a first impression! Here’s our top 5 tips for home staging:

CLEAR THE CLUTTER:

Less is more when it comes to home staging. Potential buyers want to see your home— not your stuff. As you prepare for your move to Tel Hai, rightsize by utilizing an off-site storage unit or portable storage containers like PODS.

ONE ROOM, ONE PURPOSE:

You may have a spare bedroom that’s also being used as a craft room, for holiday storage or to house your National Geographic collection. Return the room to its intended purpose. Remove items that don’t support the room’s original intention. Help a buyer envision the room as a future nursery or child’s bedroom, not a catch-all landing area.

REMOVE EXCESS FURNITURE:

Does the room really need four plant stands, three end tables, a fish tank and two bookshelves? All that furniture covers valuable assets like the beautiful hardwood floor and unique, built-in corner cupboard. By removing excess furniture, you’re opening the space visually for the buyer to imagine their belongings in the space.

LET THERE BE LIGHT:

You may have enjoyed 30 years of your custom sheers and drapery, but it’s blocking valuable light from selling your home. Pull back the shades and let the light shine in. No one wants dark and dingy. They want light and airy spaces that inspire a homey feel.

CLEAN COUNTERTOPS:

Remove items from countertops and tabletops, including in the kitchen, bathrooms, end tables and dining room tables. It may be a short-term inconvenience to stow away everyday used bathroom toiletries, but it’s showing a clean and tidy space to the buyer.

Ultimately, keep your eye on the prize of selling your home and moving to Tel Hai. Once you’re a resident, you’ll never have to replace another bush, repair a leaky faucet or install a new washing machine. Leave the work to us!

No question is too small or insignificant.

We always encourage visitors to ask any questions that come up along the way and can alter the tour to accommodate the needs or wishes of those who are visiting.

Tours are meant to give you a personalized view of Lakeview and to discuss your specific situation, because everyone’s needs are different. Most importantly during your tour, you’ll meet residents of our community and our team members.
